San Bernardino Public Library Reading Series

During my time at San Bernardino Public Library, I was given the wonderful task of reviving adult programming.  Here are some highlights from events I coordinated.

Victor Villaseñor (Macho!, Rain of Gold and Burro Genius) gave quite an inspiring presentation the night of April 20th.  It was our largest turnout yet, with over a hundred people, and Victor was gracious enough to stay until everyone’s books got signed.  Many thanks to our Literacy Center who sponsored this event!

Fiction author Lara Rios (Becoming Latina in 10 Easy Steps and Conquest) visited March 8th; she gave a really wonderful talk about writing and publishing from a Latina’s perspective.  Check out her blog here.

Joe Loya, author of the memoir The Man Who Outgrew His Prison Cell: Confessions of a Bank Robber, read and discussed his book on February 22, 2006.  Joe kept the audience captivated with stories about his life in and out of prison, and everyone truly enjoyed his visit.  Robert Rogers covered this event in The Sun: "Author Keeps Audience Riveted". (Below are photos by Linda Adams)

Mystery author Harley Jane Kozak kicked off our Reading Series January 11, 2006.  Robert Rogers, from the San Bernardino County Sun, wrote a great article about Harley’s visit: "Glamour and Storytelling Blend at Jan. 11 Event" and here are some pictures from that night:

Library Guides

Bryman College is a vocational college offering certification in five programs, including Computerized Office Applications, Dental Assisting, Homeland Security, Massage Therapy, and Medical Assisting.

The library houses a collection of about 750 books, 59 periodical titles (34 of which are current), 160 videos, and 50 CD-ROMS. This is the inside section of a brochure I designed to be incorporated in students’ orientation packets, as well as displayed in the library.

I also created subject guides for each program:

Homeland Security

Dental Assisting

Medical Assisting

Art Prints Database

In October of 2003, I began what turned out to be a monumental project: creating a Bibliography of the Art Prints housed in the Pfau Library at California State University – San Bernardino.

Because very few of the 1400 prints were in the library’s online catalog, I entered each from the card catalog, in an Excel chart.  I then matched this against the physical inventory upstairs, while also pulling those prints needing repair. The final steps were the most challenging:  verifying and updating artist information, and placing each print in their appropriate period and movement.

The bibliography was then handed over to the brilliant John Baumann and Yun Lee, who created a database searchable by artist, nationality, period, and movement.

Faculty Book Exhibit

For the Fall 2004 quarter, I organized an exhibit: Off the Syllabus: Suggested Reading by CSUSB Faculty.  Had a lovely mix of book suggestions by professors (mainly in the English department, of course!) that included such titles as Fast Food Nation, Kindred, Atonement, and Robert Kennedy and His Times.  And I was able to use some classic READ posters I found in the “Art Room” as backdrops.  Below are a couple of photos.
